However, his social anxiety and difficulties with communication made the idea of working in a large, structured environment like the government seem overwhelming. Unsure of how to translate his skills into a career, Lucas turned to Next Gen Youth Employment.
Discovery & Exploration
Lucas’s Youth Coach recognised his potential in administrative roles and guided him toward a business traineeship within the state government. Together, they explored various departments and roles, and Lucas realised that a career in public administration would be a great fit for his abilities.
Training & Certification
Next Gen provided Lucas with essential training in business administration, including office software, data management, and organisational skills. His Youth Coach also worked closely with him on developing social strategies to navigate the workplace environment, ensuring that Lucas could confidently engage with colleagues and supervisors.
Employment Placement
Lucas was placed in a paid business traineeship with a state government department. With continuous support from his Youth Coach, he quickly adapted to the structured environment, impressing his supervisors with his meticulous attention to detail and efficiency. Lucas is now thriving in his traineeship, gaining valuable experience and working towards a permanent role in public administration.

Alex’s Path to a Carpentry Apprenticeship: Building Skills, Building Confidence
Alex, a young man with an intellectual disability, had always enjoyed working with his hands and had a keen interest in building things. However, his disability made it difficult for him to navigate traditional educational and employment pathways. The idea of starting a career seemed out of reach, and Alex struggled to find opportunities where he could thrive. That’s when he and his family turned to Next Gen Youth Employment for support.
Discovery & Exploration
Alex’s Youth Coach at Next Gen recognised his passion for hands-on work and guided him toward a career in the trades. Through exploratory workshops and visits to local job sites, Alex discovered a strong interest in carpentry and decided to pursue an apprenticeship in this field.
Training & Certification
Next Gen provided Alex with the foundational skills he needed, including basic carpentry techniques and safety protocols. To ensure he was fully prepared, his Youth Coach also worked with him on time management, following instructions, and building the confidence necessary to work in a team environment. He also completed a pre apprenticeship.
Employment Placement
Alex secured a paid apprenticeship with a local construction company that values inclusivity and supports learning on the job. With continuous guidance from his Youth Coach and on-site mentoring, Alex quickly adapted to his new role. His dedication and enthusiasm impressed his supervisors, and he’s now progressing through his apprenticeship, developing skills that will lead to a successful career in carpentry.
